Title  GP training package
Description  This large project commenced in late 2001 and is nearing completion. The training package component is scheduled for completion in February 2004 and the associated website is scheduled for completion in May 2004. Several NCETA staff worked intensively on this project including Jodie Shoobridge, Carol Kennedy, Carolyn Edmonds, Sue Rayner and Ann Roche. Technical assistance with preparation of the power point material has been provided by Toby Freeman, and editorial and proofing is undertaken by Jodie Pearce (a sub-contractor to NCETA). On Tuesday 4 November a full day consultation meeting was held with DHA staff, project staff and a number of expert GP advisers and medical educators who included A/Professor Kate Conigrave, Dr Moira Sim, Dr Tori Wade, Professor Brian MacAvoy, and Dr Rodger Brough. The package has been modified to accommodate changes recommended by this group.

Following resource materials were developed through this project:
- Alcohol and Other Drugs: A Handbook for Health Professionals (3rd ed.)
- Resource Kit for GP Trainers on Illicit Drug Issues
- Website

Handbook:
This Handbook will assist health professionals to respond to alcohol and other drug (AOD) issues. It targets a large audience including non-specialist medical practitioners, nurses, health and human service workers and other health promotions workers. This edition has been expanded to reflect changes in the AOD field and includes new areas such as polydrug use, co-existing mental health problems and gambling.

Resource Kit for GP Trainers on Illicit Drug Issues:
This kit will assist trainers to provide general practitioners (GPs) with improved knowledge and skills about illicit drugs issues. It covers a broad range of training materials based on evidence based perspectives and is designed to be of practical value to GPs in their day-to-day practice. Trainers can select or ‘mix and match’ material according to participants’ training needs and the trainer’s training style.
